Our History

Spartan Iron & Metal

Spartan Recycling Group has a long family history in the scrap metal industry.  In the mid 1970s Marvin Siegel left the textile business for Spartan Iron & Metal Corp., a scrap metal processor with single locations in Spartanburg and Greenville, SC.  He worked his way from manager to partner and eventually to sole proprietor.  By 1990 the company also employed his three sons and together they expanded the business including a third state-of the-art greenfield facility to serve a growing industrial base.

 Carolinas Recycling Group

In 1998 the Siegels co-founded Carolinas Recycling Group (CRG) which grew in size to include numerous facilities in both Carolinas and Georgia and was recognized as the 14th largest scrap metal processor in North America (Waste News survey).  CRG and its successor company (Recycle South) operated 25 facilities in the southeast before it was acquired by a steel manufacturer in 2008.
